Timber Frame Workshops Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any experience to attend the workshop?
Absolutely not! The workshops are to be an introduction to timber framing where one can learn/practice at their own pace. We try to limit the class numbers in order to provide as much individual attention as possible with in the time frame. I personally had little to no experience for my first workshop and learned a lot, however, I found that I needed another workshop to more confidently grasp all the material that was covered.
Do I need any special tools?
Once you express interest, Jim will provide a suggested tool list. If you don't have the tools, we will have some tool-share options to be sure you have tools to work with. The Learning Center has many powered and hand tools for you to use. Tools will be onsite for purchase.
What should I expect the schedule to look like?
The workshop hours are from 8-5, with a lunch break with food provided by the Center. Aside from those hours, the class is for you. You can learn at your own pace. The objective is not to complete the frame, rather for you to gather as much knowledge as you can in the time allotted.
How should I dress for the workshop?
The workshop is hosted in a heated space. Weather permitting, we may venture outside to chat about the mill, or other topics. Summertime classes will enjoy open doors and gentle breezes. However, in the interest of safety, no open toe shoes.
Where can I stay during the workshop?
The closest Hotels are in Asheville and Black Mountain. There are many places to choose from based on your budget. Currently, we are working to find lodging that will offer discounts for our workshops and we’ll provide that info during the registration process. Have a small camper? For a small fee to cover the electricity, you can set up on our lot, however no water or sewer hookups. There is a shower available on-site, in the shop. Snacks, cold drinks and coffee will be offered throughout the day. There is a section on the registration to make us aware of dietary preferences.
What else should I bring?
Proper protective equipment. Eye and hearing protection will be used every time a power tool is used. As mentioned before, no open toe shoes will be permitted. Also, bring a camp chair and a coffee mug!
